Southern Fried Cabbage Recipe

2/1/17

Southern Fried Cabbage with bits of tender ham served in an embellished white serving dish. How to cook southern, soul food style, fried cabbage with bacon, onions, and peppers.

A Simple Recipe for Southern Fried Cabbage!

Lately I’ve been craving cabbage like crazy. Luckily I have many good cabbage recipes. The last cabbage recipe that I posted was for my southern cabbage with ham hock, which I made in the slow cooker. A lot of my viewers  tried and loved that recipe, so I’m back with another southern cabbage recipe (I have so many southern cabbage recipes hunny!). This time around I’m going to show you how to make southern fried cabbage with bacon!

While you’re here, check out some of my other cabbage recipes!

Tender cabbage, crisp bacon and bright red peppers served in an embossed white serving dish.

This recipe is quite easy, and you only need a couple ingredients to whip up this southern dish.  I like to serve my southern fried cabbage with cornbread, and roast chicken. However, you can eat this cabbage alone.

Ingredients

  • 3 pound head of cabbage sliced & washed
  • 1/2 pound thick cut bacon cut in small pieces
  • 1 red bell pepper diced
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • 1 large yellow onion diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  • Toss the bacon into a large pot or pan, then place over medium heat.
  • Cook the bacon until it's browned, and most of the fat is rendered.
  • Remove the bacon pieces from the pan/pot, then set to the side.
  • Toss in the cabbage, peppers, and onions.
  • NOTE: EVERYTHING WILL NOT FIT INTO THE POT AT FIRST. ONCE IT COOKS, IT WILL SHRINK!
  • Once the cabbage and other ingredients start to get tender( about 10 minutes) sprinkle in the salt, black pepper, garlic & onion powder and red pepper flakes.
  • Cook for another 5 minutes or so, then toss in the bacon.
  • Stir the ingredients, then add everything into your serving dish.
  • Serve and enjoy!

    Hi Rosie

I can’t eat bacon. Is there anything else I can substitute for the bacon?

    Thanks

Hey Cj. Leave the bacon completely out, and fry the cabbage in vegetable oil. You can add liquid smoke for smokey flavor. 🙂

I had some cabbage & green pepper left over from my farm share and I thought there’s got to be a way to put them together— your post was the first I found and I can’t wait to make it.
I’m mostly a vegetarian though so I’m going to use the liquid smoke addition idea instead of the bacon. Looking forward to trying out your other recipes too.
And thank you for the Black History Month recipes as well!

Hello there, Rosie. I tried this recipe with ham chips left over from Christmas. It was absolutely delicious. It tasted like the smothered cabbage my mother used to make in Arkansas. I also added pepper sauce which made it even better. Now, I’ve got a fantastic cabbage recipe for my files. Thanks

OH MY GOD THIS IS SO GOOD! I’m not a veggie eater AT ALL, but this tasted so amazing. It’s one of my favorite dishes now. It went amazing with the baked chicken breast we had. Next time I’ll definitely try it with olive oil and turkey sausage next time. This is definitely going to be on the table next Thanksgiving.

I tried this recipe today but I put a little twist on it… I used venison instead of bacon and I added cayenne pepper and brown sugar to give it that sweet and spicy twist. Delicious. Can’t wait to try more of your recipes.

Hi! Quick question. The recipe calls for minced garlic AND garlic powder but doesn’t say which is being added with the onion powder. Are both garlics being added at the same time? Thanks in advance
