Neck bones are sometimes found in the section where they keep seasoning meat such as pig tails, hog joules, salt pork that kind of stuff. Smoked and non smoked are usually together and once you see them you will definitely see a difference. Some are with reg meats. We have them as a pick 5 where you get 5 packs for $20. Good luck to you

Made this tonight. I didn’t have regular onions, so I used scallions. I personally don’t eat neckbones but my husband do he is from New York and I’m from GA and he loves my southern cooking, so when he requested neckbones and I didn’t have the first clue as to cooking them I had to come to the Internet lol. I paired them with red beans and rice, green beans, and cornbread. He loved it

I made tonight mostly as written. Used short ribs instead of neck bones. Beef broth for the vegetable broth and a tad of worchesterchire sauce. All ingredients wouldn’t fit in my crockpot so I used the stove and a heavy pot. The Husband loved it and said “this is a keeper don’t change a thing”. Thanks, Rosie!
Tina says
Hi Rosie…
I have never had neck bones before or thought about cooking them. Came across your site while in the grocery store and decided to give it a try. I followed your instructions and let me tell you…the BOMB!! Delicious!! I also decided to make white rice and green beans along with some cornbread. My husband text me and said dinner was absolutely wonderful. I recently got married. I haven’t been cooking much because I am so busy. Often, I find myself cooking the same ole stuff and I only feel excited about cooking on the holidays. It’s nice to find a site with such variety and recipes that are not too difficult to make. Your recipes are realistic for the average everyday working woman who doesn’t have time to slave in the kitchen but wants to cook a great meal. Im excited to try all of your recipes. I shared this site with my daughter too! You have a new fan! Thanks so much!!
Cookie says

Sham says
Rosie this is the first recipe of yours that I tried and I promise you have a fan for life. My whole family is originally from MS so I’m used to southern cooking. Being that my mother lives moved out of state I have to learn how to cook these foods for myself and my family now. My little family loved this recipe. I got too much meat and had to use 2 slow cookers. Not a prob though it was still gone within 2 days. My mother did give me extra advise on cleaning the neck bones. She had me rinse them then boil them for about 5 minutes. A lot of froth floated to the top. I then rinsed again and seasoned!
Thank you Rosie. I’m looking forward to cooking more of your recipes.
Yvonne Smiley says
Hi Rosie thank you for all your recipes. Can this recipe be frozen? If so any special instructions.
Rosie says
Hi Yvonne! It sure can. I simply put them in freezer bags ( or vacuum sealed), and freeze for a later day 😉
Vicki says

I have been making pork neck bones for years. Since I am Italian we were always taught to partially cook them, and then cook them in a wine based red sauce for about 6 hours. Your receipe was absolutely delicious, the spices and brown really enhance the flavor. I cannot wait to try your other recipes.
Rose Murrill says
Hello Rosie. I just wanted to know if boneless pork neck bones can be an alternative for crockpot neck bones and potatoes recipe?

TPortch says
I’m so glad I chose this recipe as a base for my first time cooking neck bones. I halved the recipe, put a half the onion on the bottom, then the bones, then the other half of the onion, gravy mix, half a head of cabbage cut into wedges, and a large cubed potato. I also added some sage, thyme and celery seed before adding the water. I cooked this in my rice cooker: one hour on warm, 30 minutes on steam, and another hour and a half on warm. The cabbage added a lot of moisture so at this point I removed the cabbage and potatoes and cooked the meat and gravy with the lid open on steam for another 30 minutes to thicken it up and it was fabulous in four hours. Served with a raw salad and buttermilk biscuits. Cheap and easy and delicious, and the bones weren’t nearly the hassle I was afraid they’d be, the meat did indeed fall right off. Thanks.
Roshari says
Hey Rosie, can I cook them on low for 8hours. I would like to cook them while at work!
Rosie says
Hello Roshari! I apologize for the late response, but yes. That can be done.
Justas says
I am going to try this recipe tomorrow with the boneless neck bones I got from the store yesterday. I usually cook them in red pepper vinegar but these look really good. They will go perfectly with the turnips and greens I prepped today that are waiting in the fridge to be cooked. Your bone in neckbones look so meaty! The bone in ones I usually find don’t have much meat at all. Thanks for posting! 🙂
Rosie says
Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
Tracy says
Rosie!! Thank you!!! My first time cooking neck bone..(shame on me I’m from Alabama) amazing!!!
Stacy says
Greetings Rosie says! Can I add different meats and veggies with your neckbone recipe?
Rosie says
You can try it, but I personally just like the recipe how it is 🙂
Misscae says
Hello! I made some pork neck bones into Gamjatang a few weeks ago and loved it but turned out to be slightly allergic to one of the ingredients. So now I’m cooking the rest of the neck bones using your recipe with a few hints of the gamjatang recipe, ie I’m adding fresh garlic, ginger, peppercorns and red pepper flakes.. I was wondering how much more stock might u add to make this into a soup. I just filled up my slow cooker and turned it on, can’t wait to try this!
Jeanette Clark says
It love this recipe.Cooking it again right nowIt’s so good!!
Rosie says
YASSSS!!! XOXO!
Nicole says
Was a little sceptical as the recipe seemed so simple, but… it had a high rating so thought I’d risk it! I live in NZ, couldn’t find neck bones so used general ‘pork bones’ from the super market (seemed to be mainly rib). No pre-browning, easy prep, few ingredients and very economical but WOW!!!! So friggin yummy and so damn easy!!!! Highly recommend, making it again tonight, thanks for a great easy satisfying recipe!
Rosie says
Hi Nicole! Thanks so much for the review!! Glad that you liked my recipe!
Karen says
Have you tried this in the Instapot? What setting would you recommend?
Rosie says
Hey there Karen. When I make this in the Instant Pot I cook it on the meat setting ( starting off with the neck bones) for 30 minutes. I do a slow release, then add in the potatoes, and cook for another 14 minutes. I hope this helps. XOXO
Marion says
Good Morning! I have VERY fond memories of NAKED Bones & rice from my childhood days! YOU ARE AWSOME! You take me back so much! While I haven’t had them with potatoes, I’m looking forward to making them. I really don’t like making comments BEFORE making something, but YOU made me SMILE so hard that my face hurts! Not sure when I’ll make them but I DID save it for when I want to. THANK YOU!
Rosie says
This comment made me smile!!! Isn’t it funny how a recipe can take you down memory lane?? Glad to speak some of those old memories my love! Thank you so much for leaving this wonderful comment!

Rosie says
Hi Alex! You sure can!
Cindy Kitchel says
Holy cow. I bought neck bones on a whim and found this recipe. SO good! I never would have guessed neck bones would be in our regular rotation, but they are going to be. So good and easy. The bones were partially frozen so I put them on high for about four hours, then turned to low. They were probably on low for six hours because it was a busy work day. They came out perfect. Thank you!
Sonya says
Hi. Will this recipe work with beef neck bones the same? Thank you and Happy New Year!

Yes, you can use been neck bones.

Good Morning! I JUST read the email & THOUGH it’s 7 am, YOU brought me back to my childhood AGAIN! My mom made “naked” bones with rice & sometimes potatoes. How I wish I were your “REAL” cousin so I could bother you ALL THE TIME! I’d be a HUGE help as you’d NEVER have to “taste test” ANYTHING again. Have a GREAT day my fellow “Cousins”!
Rosie says
Happy to bring back memories! XOXO
Trish says
love that you share these recipes.

Awesome soul food recipes and Rosie is a good blogger. She is warm and welcoming, has a good personality, and makes you feel like you are in the kitchen with her!
Rosie says
Thank you so much!
Mark says
Hey Rosie, made your recipe today with beef neck bones, turned out good except the gravy is really thin. Why 3 cups of broth when the gravy packets for 2 uses 2 cups of water? How do I thicken the gravy?
Rosie says
Hi there. The broth, in my opinion, thickens with the other ingredients. I don’t like a super thick for this dish. If you do, you can add less liquid. XOXO
Raina says
Did you cut the meat off of the bone before cooking or did you remove the bone after cooking?
Rosie says
I don’t cut the meat off the bones before of after. I serve them with the bone.
DeAnna says
What’s the measurements for only 2lbs of neck bones?
Rosie says
Hi DeAnna, It would be close to the written recipe. You’ll have to play around with it a tad.
Ramona Edwards says
Always use your pork neck bones and potatoes, we love it as a family. Added slice carrots today.
Vickey Farmer says
I gonna to be trying this out on tomorrow
