An Easy Recipe for Country Chicken Fried Steak with White Gravy!
Every time that I make Country Chicken Fried Steak I think of the first time I had it. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was undecided on what to order, so my mother suggested it – it being her favorite and all. I went ahead and ordered it because I trusted my mothers judgement. Besides – I figured that it was “chicken” fried steak, and you can’t go wrong with chicken right (so I thought, but that’s a completely different blog post!). When my plate arrived to the table I saw these beautiful golden fried patties topped with white gravy. The steaks were served along with sunny side eggs and hash browns. Everything looked perfect! I remember biting into the steak, which was perfectly seasoned, and tasting the combination of the steak and the gravy. It was like a match made in heaven! BUT I quickly realized that I wasn’t eating “chicken”! I was a little confused. I asked my mother to taste it just to make sure that I had the right order, but My mother was too consumed with her plate to worry about mine. I decided to ask the waitress what I was eating, and the waitress politely explained to me that Country Chicken Fried Steak was a cubed beef steak that was fried the same way that people fry chicken. I was satisfied with the answer, and I quickly returned to back to my plate! Although I was expecting chicken, the chicken fried steak surpassed my expectations! Since then, Chicken Fried Steak has been a favorite main dish. I not only serve it for breakfast but for dinner as well! It goes great with creamy mashed potatoes and green beans!
Believe it or not, Country Chicken Fried Steak is actually very easy to make. A lot of people and recipes will have you thinking otherwise, but this is actually one of the easiest recipes ever. You just need a few ingredients (posted below), and you will be able to make this delicious steak and gravy completely from scratch! No more having to buy it pre-battered or get it from your favorite dinner…You can do this!

Country Chicken Fried Steak with White Gravy
Ingredients
- 4 cubed steaks each about 1/4 lb
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper optional
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 cup whole milk use whole milk because its creamier than 2% and fat free milk
- 1 tbsp butter salted or unsalted
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the salt and ground black pepper, and mix well.
- Season each sides of the cubed steaks with half of the salt and pepper mix.
- Next add one egg, and a 1/2 cup of buttermilk into a dish, and whisk them together.
- In a separate dish add in : 1 cup all purpose flour, remaining salt and pepper, and 1 tsp cayenne pepper. Whisk the ingredients together and make sure that they are well combined.
- Coat the cubed steaks with the egg and buttermilk mixture, then coat them with the seasoned flour.
- Shake off any excess Flour, and reserve the leftover flour.
- Pour 1 1/2 cup oil into a frying pan. Place the pan over medium heat.
- Once the oil is nice and hot, add in the steaks. Be sure to not over crowd the pan.
- Cook each steak for about 10 minutes.
- Once you remove the steaks from the pan, place them on a paper towel lined place to get rid of the excess oil. (reserve 3 tbsp of the oil)
- Add 1 tbsp butter, and 3 tbsp of vegetable oil (I use the left over oil from which I used to fry the steaks) into a pan. Place the pan over medium heat.
- Once the oil and butter is melted and hot, sprinkle in about 2 tbsp of the seasoned flour that we reserved.
- Stir the flour in with the oil and butter, and then pour in 1 cup of whole milk.
- Stir until everything is nice and smooth, and let the gravy cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes.
- Serve the steaks either with gravy on the side OR poured on top.

this is a great recipe. I’ve been using a wok to fry my steaks, it only requires a small amt of oil to completely cover steaks. This recipe is what we call country fried steak. I’m from Texas. We are a little weird . The southern smotherd chicken is great

I have tried for many years to keep the breading on my cube steaks, pork chops, chicken for frying. And, I have tried dipping in egg and milk and then flour. And it keeps ending up in the pan and not on the meat. Any suggestions? I do so miss Southern Cooking. Do you have a recipe for breaded pork chops with gravy? thanks in advance
Rosie says
Hi Janet. I’m not sure why you’re having a problem with the egg staying on the meat. Have you already tried my recipe? It should work. Also, I have a fried pork chop recipe, and a smothered pork chop recipe available. 🙂

I just made this tonight and it was AMAZING!!! No more pre-made patties for me. My daughter who is extremely picky about the texture of steak or any types of meat loved it. It had just the right amount of spice. I normally buy gravy in a packet, but no more! Thanks so much Rosie!
