Easy chicken pot pie made with biscuits instead of a traditional crust. This budget meal is definitely a family favorite!
I just love a good old fashioned chicken pot pie, especially during the colder months. Seriously, nothing screams comfort food like a homemade chicken pot pie. The hot creamy pie filling with juicy chicken meat, and mixed vegetables. It just doesn’t get any better. I personally love all types of chicken pot pie (even the little frozen ones… no shame in my game). However, When I make chicken pot pies, I like to keep it easy. Instead of using crust, I prefer to make chicken pot pie with biscuits.
Canned Biscuits: The Secret Ingredient to Quick and Easy Chicken Pot Pie

GREAT recipe for a working mommy! Tammy family LOVED IT! Thanks! Your recipes are great!
Terri says
I have used several kinds of canned biscuits now for this recipe. Seems the โ buttermilkโ style biscuits do pretty good. The โoriginalโ ones donโt do well. I agree this recipe is on point
Alisa says
Super yummy! I used buttermilk biscuits like recommended, and had a similar issue to others, the bottoms of the biscuits would not cook. So half way through I flipped the biscuits over and that worked really well. Makes good leftovers too!
Mary says
I love this recipe! Iโm thinking about making it for my sister who recently had a baby, would we be able to freeze this before baking?
Rosie says
Hi Mary! I never froze it before, I’m sorry.
Kim says
Thanks for posting this. My mom had a version of this in the hospital this summer and I’ve been trying to find a recipe ever since.

How my gosh this happened to me too! Was such a pain! Just when I thought dinner was readyโฆ. Nope!
Wish I would have read your comment before!
Ebony Tabb says
Hi Rosie, if I use grands biscuits, do I use 8 instead of 16 biscuits?
Rosie says
Yes, you’d just use the 8. Great question.
JasLyn says
Absolutely love your personality! I made this dish for my family just now and they love it. I’m not a big fan of pot pie but you may have changed my mind! Will be trying more recipes!
JasLyn says
I used Cresent rolls instead of biscuits. I rolled the whole thing over the top and let it cook

Rosie says
For best results, stick to the ingredients listed.
Abby says
3 days after Thanksgiving and the whole family is sick. Needed something mild on the tummy and easy for sick mom to make. I used canned chicken, canned peas and carrots, skipped the cheese (sorry but something very wrong about cheese in a pot pie, maybe I’m just old fashioned) and the can of soup. Had a tube of biscuits in the fridge so thankfully everything was on hand. Threw it all together with little effort and it’s baking now. Thank you for this recipe, my sick household appreciates it!
Rosie says
You’re so sweet Abby! Thanks so much for the lovely feedback!
abby says
Had to add- you have a beautiful smile, and the rest of your recipes look amazing!
Jen says
My whole family loved it. I also added a can of diced potatoes. Next time I’ll cook the biscuits separate since they didn’t cook evenly for me. But definitely making it again
Hannah says
Might be a silly question., but Iโm going to try this tonight. Do you cook the biscuits separate or lay them on top?
Rosie says
Hi Hannah, That’s not a silly question. You can cook them separate, and add on top once done. This may actually be better, since some people are saying that their biscuits come out raw if not cooked before. Happy Holidays!
Jennifer says
Well my biscuits came out raw, I used two cans of buttermilk biscuits and they are bigger. Iโve had to put it back in two times and it still is partly doughy. Donโt know what I did wrong but it smells good
Rosie says
Hi Jennifer! This seems to be a common issue. I’ve been recommending that people bake the biscuits for about 5-7 minutes before, then placing it on top of the pot pie mixture, and baking as directed. I apologize for the inconvenience.
Theresa says
Do you just add the cream of chicken soup by itself or with water?
Thank you for answering everyoneโs questions.
Theresa
Rosie says
Hello Theresa. No, I just use what is listed ๐
Sandra says
Loved this recipe! I had the same issue with the biscuits being raw on the bottom. I will definitely try to cook the biscuits for a few mins before and then add them. My husband and son loved this recipe! It is for sure a keeper!
Cynthia says
I have made this twice now and it is a huge family favorite. I haven’t had any issues with the biscuits not being cooked thru but I did read all concerns before making and cut my biscuits smaller (used Grands Flakey Buttermilk, each cut in 8) Reminded me of a cross between potpie and chicken and dumplings. I even had some left over the last time and froze it all together. When I took it out of the freezer, I pried off the biscuits, warmed the base in the microwave, put the biscuits back on top and popped in the oven to warm back up. Came back just like fresh!
Rosie says
Thanks so much for the feedback. XOXO
John says
Excellent! Followed the recipe, precooking the biscuits. Final result was they browned up beautifully, vegetables still popped. Very tasty.
Elizabeth says
Awesome recipe! Glad to have read reviews. I added a little extra garlic (personal preference) and also some Italian seasoning blend for more flavor. Also, I used the grands biscuits and only needed one container since the are bigger! I flipped them halfway through which eliminated the soggyness of the biscuit dough at the end! Itโs so yummy and filling and I make this dish quite often!
Deb says
This is delicious. I will definitely make again. Could I get the nutritional information please?
Jodi Johnson says
Love this recipe! So simple and delicious. My family continually asks me to make it weekly!

Very good! The bottom on the biscuits were soggy and not cooked. I flipped them over to finish cooking. Not the prettiest presentation, but yummy weeknight meal. ๐

Are you supposed to add water to the cream of chicken cans?
Rosie says
Hello. No, I didn’t add water.
Kat says

What a fantastic idea for chicken pot pie. We loved it.
A says
It tastes really good! The biscuits take forever tho. Turned into a 45 min meal. Next time I may cook them all the way by themselves and add them on at the end.
Linda says
Absolutely Delicious!! Very easy recipe, the only thing I did different was I cubed some potatoes and when done mixed them in with everything else.
Would definitely make it againโฆ
Kim says
Hi! When do you add the minced garlic?
Rosie says
Hello! You can add it during step #3
Carol says
I made this for one person (I live with my cat Sweetie) I halved the recipe and it turned out amazing! Itโs enough for a couple of days as long as I have it for lunch and dinner. It tastes as good as it looks!! Iโm glad I found this tasty and filling warm up and comforting dish!! Thank you for sharing!!
Tammy says
Tasted delicious! After having to flip the biscuits part way through, I got the idea of next time trying a stuffing on the top. I will definitely use this recipe for my Thanksgiving leftovers.
Thanks for sharing!
Maria says
This needed to cool way longer than 25 minutes for me, about 30-40.
Marissa says
Love the idea to toss the cut up biscuits in butter and cook a little before put on the pot pie mixture!! So smart because the bottoms don’t get cooked and you end up turning them! Brilliant!!
Spring says
I love your recipes, easy to follow! perfect for this time of year!
Erica says
Was very good! Only thing I didnโt read was the comments saying the bottoms of the biscuits werenโt done. I flipped them over and let them cook a bit longer, no big deal. Definitely a keeper.
Emily says
Very easy to make and so delicious!

This is SO good! Thereโs only two of us so it fed us for days but we didnโt mind, it makes amazing leftovers! Definitely adding to our rotation.
Melinda Harrison says
Great recipe! I love chicken pot pie. I saved the drizzle step and used buttery biscuits. I used a ceramic dish instead of glass and it did not get as hot so recommend using glass. If I use ceramic again I’m going to try baking the mix for 10 minutes before adding the pre-baked bicuits.
Krista says
Loves how easy this is! I’ve already made it twice!
Kelly says
Looks delicious going to make tonight, but I don’t see where you add the garlic?
Rosie says
Hello, you would add it in step 3.
Kbl says
Making it I put the biscuits on the bottom lol and accidentally put the mixture on top lol hope it turns out good
Jaien says
I am making this tonight! I saw your recipes for smothered recipes. Do you have a recipe for smothered deer steak?
Rosie says
Hi there! I don’t have any deer recipes. Sorry.
M. Shier says
Great family meal. Easy and delicious. Recipe is easy to follow. Definitely will be making this again and again.
Rosie says
This recipe looks so good however I recommend cooking the biscuits completely before cutting them and adding them on top. The biscuits were still doughy after cooking them for almost 40 minutes
Cristina Curcio says
I made this for dinner and was delicious. Even my picky ass kids liked it. I baked the biscuits for 7 minutes and placed ontop the mixture and it turned nice and golden brown. Thank you.โค๏ธโค๏ธ
Rosie says
Thanks so much for trying my recipe!
Jeremy says
Very simple and very delicious!!!
Jeanne Ruoff says
Delicious! I actually changed a few things from another recipe and added cream cheese and a little heavy cream to the gravy. I sauteed chopped celery, onions and red pepper in 2 T of butter, added 2 T of flour and a cup or two of chicken broth to make a gravy instead of one of the cans of cream of chicken soup. Then to make it creamier I added 4 ounces of cream cheese and some heavy cream. It was so good. Thanks for sharing the recipe. ๐
Lexy says
Tried this recipe tonight and both myself and my husband loved it (the toddler is a harder sell). My only issue was that 16 biscuits was way too many and they couldn’t all fit on the 9×13 pan. Next time I’ll either do just 8 or 12. Other than that, very good and will make again!
Debbie says
Make today and it was amazing and so easy! Definitely making again

LOVED IT!!!! VERY EASY & SIMPLE !! THE FAMILY LOVED IT!!! I USED THE BIG CANS OF MIXED VEGGIES (2) AND ADDED ANOTHER CAN OF CREAM OF CHICKEN SOUP. BAKED BISCUITS FOR SEVEN MNUTES. I USED THE BIG SOUTHERN HOMESTYLE GRAND BISCUITS IT DIDNT TAKE TWO CANS 16 BISCUITS IF USE BIG CANS OF BISCUIT AND CUT UP IN QUARTERS ONE WILL BE ENOUGH . I HAD FIVE BISCUITS LEFT .
