Soul food style salmon croquettes made easy with canned salmon.
I keep getting a ton of request for canned salmon recipes. Trust me hunny, I have so many of them! To get started, I’m going to share my soul food style salmon croquettes!
Other than beans & rice, chicken, and greens – canned salmon was something that I was raised on. We made everything from salmon chowder, salmon burgers, salmon casseroles, and of course salmon croquettes (aka salmon patties) with out canned salmon. Salmon croquettes was always my favorite, because it could be served with almost anything.
Seriously in the morning, I serve these easy salmon croquettes with creamy buttery grits, and scrambled eggs. For lunch I may serve these salmon patties with a tossed salad. For dinner I like these easy salmon croquettes with greens, and of course some southern style sweet cornbread.
Again, I use canned salmon for this recipe, but if you want to use fresh salmon to make your salmon croquettes you certainly can.

I’ll try this one for sure. The last time I did any was a year ago and I used potatoes instead of bread crumbs. Needless to say that they didn’t come out well.
Christine says
Thank you for this yummy recipe. I’m 67, grew up down South, Mom made salmon patties a lot, I thought that was her Wisconsin coming out. And, as a young bride, I made them often, always served with English peas and mashed or new potatoes. You don’t mention removing the bones, Mom and I never did, they “mooshed” up just fine, I thought that added calcium.
Rosie says
Yeah. No need to remove the bones ๐
Antoinette Lewis says
How much garlic powder?
Rosie says
1 1/2 tsp.
LB says
Hey Rosie,
You are right on time! This is in my meal plan for next week. How much garlic powder do we add? Thanks for sharing!
Rosie says

Hi Rosie,
If I may ask, how many minutes did you fry the salmon croquettes on both sides if I may ask, like for how many minutes on each side before they are done? Want to make sure mine is done correctly and not overcook it ๐
Rosie says
Maybe three minutes or so ๐
Joy says
Love these southern croquettes . Follow this recipe the other day . Took me back to when I was a child. These were really good. The only thing is before the bread crumbs were adding I had more flavor after the bread crumbs added took away some of the flavor. This recipe is a keeper. Simple and good. Thank you

I tried the salmon croquettes recipe and they came out great. Usually mine are dry and tasteless but I kept the juice in and just discarded the bones (don’t like bones). They were moist, tasteful. I used two cans and made them like small hamburger size. I opened up a large can of Bush’s BBQ Beans. Excellent meal! Thanks for the tips.

Thanks so much for trying!! XOXO

Hello Rosie, I just love this recipe but, it was a little salty for me and my husband, so next time I will use 1 tsp of salt instead of two. I also didn’t have breadcrumbs so I used crackers, it might have played a roll in it being salty also!
Rosie says
Hi Tina! Yes for best results stick to the recipe listed ๐

I put my patties in the freezer 10-15 minutes before frying. This seems to make them hold together while frying.

I hadn’t made croquettes in years, so I needed a refresher course. I selected this recipe because it was the most like how I remember making them, and the measurements and directions were very clear. Some recipes out there had some ingredients that I’d never used and it seemed too busy. This recipe was perfect and there are no leftovers because he went for seconds. Win!

I used.cracker I hope it turns out for me. Thank You for the recipe.
