Cheesy Garlic & Herb Cornbread is the perfect side to any soul food meal!Homemade cheesy garlic & herb cornbread that will go great with any soul food or southern meal!

How many cornbread recipes can one have?  HUNDREDS if you ask me! With as many southern and soul food dishes, I have plenty of cornbread recipes to choose from. I have everything from buttermilk skillet cornbread, sweet cornbread, to my new favorite – cheesy garlic & herb cornbread!Cheesy Garlic & Herb Cornbread is so moist and packed full of flavor!

My homemade cheesy garlic & herb cornbread is made with yellow cornmeal, and all purpose flour. The cornbread batter has a ton of sharp cheddar cheese, and herbs such as thyme, sage, basil, and even marjoram.This Cheesy Garlic & Herb Cornbread is so versatile!

This cornbread pairs well with blackeyed peas, and southern red beans and rice, and can also be used in cornbread dressing!

Cheesy Garlic & Herb Cornbread

This homemade, moist cornbread is packed with cheese, garlic, and herbs, making it the perfect side with a bit of a bite. Pair with pasta for a satisfying dinner!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cup yellow corn meal
  • 2 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 6 large eggs lightly beaten
  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 6 tbsp melted butter plus more for greasing
  • 3 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp dry thyme leaves
  • 1 1/2 tsp crushed basil leaves
  • 1 tsp rosemary leaves
  • 1 tsp chopped marjoram
  • 4 cloves crushed garlic

Instructions

  • Sift or whisk the flour, corn meal, salt, and baking powder.
  • Next add in the eggs, melted butter, oil, and milk.
  • Mix until well combined.
  • Add in the cheese, garlic, and herbs.
  • Fold the ingredients.
  • Grease a 9x13, then pour in the cornbread batter.
  • Bake on 350 F for 20 - 25 minutes.
  • Serve & Enjoy!

    Hi Rosie! This looks really great especially since I love garlic and cheese in anything. Question – could I substitute bacon drippings for the butter? This Texas girl was raised up with cornbread made with bacon? Thanks so much! Love your recipes!

      It will take away from the flavor, but it can be left out if needed.

    I made today and it was really good! I did have to cook it 10 mins longer. Mine browned but not as pretty as yours did, any suggestions? This is definately a keeper recipe (big proud smile)

      Not sure why it didn’t look the same. Your oven probably runs a little cooler than mine. That could be why it took longer to cook. Happy New Year!
