alk84 says
I used ground flax instead of cornstarch for a lower carb option. My husband liked it very much and my 13 yr old asked for seconds so I guess it worked.

Hi Rosie, I’m using smoke neck bones as well, so would I just omit the salt and vinegar?

If I could fix the pin on this I would. It uses the picture of mashed potatoes to save the pin. I made this for dinner tonight but took the meat off the bones and added it back to the gravy. It’s delicious!!
Keli says
Can you use this same recipe if cooking on the stove (or in the oven)and if so, how long would you cook them on the stove or in the oven and at what setting/temp? Thanks
Rosie says
Yes. The same recipe can be used on the stove top. Cook on med for 1 hour 30 minutes .
Barbara says
These were the best neckbones that I have eaten in my life. That’s saying something as I am a senior citizen. I had sworn off of them because I don’t want to work to get my meat off the bone. Well, no problem here. Stick the fork to the bone and the meat falls off! The bones even separated. I followed the recipe, but I did cook them for five hours as I had a bit more than four pounds. I had cabbage and mashed potatoes and with the gravy, I was in food heaven. This recipe is definitely a keeper.
Rosie says
Hi Barbara! Glad that you liked the recipe!
Candice Parker says
I can’t wait to try Ur recipe…. It looks and sounds delicious

Hello Rosie,
I will be trying your recipe today, however when you were asked about the neck bones being smoked it wasn’t clear what to do, are you saying just slow cook without adding any ingredients?
Rosie says
I personally wouldn’t use them for this recipe. If you’re interested in a smoked neck bone recipe try this one.
Teresa says
Hi Rosie! I’m about to make this. I’m wondering how the skimming is avoided? Whenever, I have made them on the stovetop I’ve had to skim the foam off.
Rosie says
Clean the neck bones well, and skin when needed 🙂

Rosie, I just had to write and tell you how many times your website has rescued me! Long story short, I’m in my 40’s and pretty much just started actually cooking two years ago. Sad to say, but I and my older sister would go to our parents house several times a week (and we’d take home leftovers too!) My father passed and my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Dementia and I had to move in to take care of her. Being from Louisiana, my mother – and sister who still comes over – have a specific level of expectation in their meals and I was woefully unprepared to fill it. And then I found you…
I have used your receipes for everything from everyday meals to Holidays (I think Christmas 2016 menu was ALL you). I have your YouTube videos on speed dial! So thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping this old dog learn some very needed new tricks!
Yvonne
Rosie says
OMG, Yvonne! Thank YOU for sharing this with me! It made me smile. I’m glad that I could help! XOXO
Veronica says
Rosie I have question. If I use flour instead of cornstarch word I use vall purpose is self rising flour. I have both all purpose and self rising flour. I don’t keep cornstarch but I buy a box. Is there particular branch you recommend.
Rosie says
Hey Veronica! If you use flour, use regular all purpose flour. Any brand should do 🙂
MitchellNeely says

Your the best. I was raised on Soul Food, didn’t know it as such, we just called it Country Cooking. Cook whats’s available, and eat what’s cooked. I have used many of your recipes and will continue to do so, their homegrown and built with love…I’m especially fond of neck bones and Pigs feet and will pass up steak for either, especially if there are side orders of corn bread, black eye peas, rice, and greens. Thank YOU
Rosie says
Hi Robert! I’m glad that you like my recipes!! XOXO
Shanita says
Delicious!! I have been looking for a neckbone recipe that is similar to my childhood memories. This surpassed all. I cooked them on top of the stove and they still came out just right. Thank you.
Veronica says
Rosie,
It came out absolutely delicious. I used smoked neck bones and I omitted the applie cider vinegar. I used sea salt instead and added fresh carrots, potatoes, green beans and a green bell pepper. I also added complete seasoning and a little more garlic powder and pepper. It was amazing!! My husband and I finished our plates so fast I had to ask… “ Did I fix us both enough?” Lol! We absolutely loved it. This recipe will be on repeat in our household for sure.
Nikki says
Will beef broth work as well
Rosie says

Gary Bennett says
Foolproof recipe. I wan not a big fan of neckbones but I’m now converted. My mom is 85 years old, from Alabama and she says these are the best she’s EVER tasted! I followed the recipe to the letter twice.
BOBBY ROBERTS says
Rosie
My wife doesn’t know it but I’m in love with you. I have commented on you and your recipes before, have tried many, and read many others. My favorites are the Great Soul Food dishes created from the less desirable portions of the animal, i.e. Pigs feet, neckbone etc. I have used this recipe several times with amazing results each time. I do add some chopped green and red bell peppers to your ingredients. I’m not a great cook. But give me a slow cooker and a recipe and I’m good to go
Rosie says
So glad that you like my recipes!! Thanks for using them.
Sa Gordon says
Those neck bones were delicious, I’ve made them several times. BRAVO
Gabrellesoul says
Excellent recipe and neckbones came out amazing! My only personal add to the recipe was 1tbsp of Lawry’s and a few red pepper flakes for a little added spice. They were delicious! Thank you as this is now my go-to neckbones recipe
Venetia Aiken says
Well this old canadian gal had never heard of pork neck bones, let alone eaten one. I won’t tell you how I can to have 5 lbs of them in my fridge, but thought I would google it anyway, and decided on this recipe. It was a gift from the heavens! Today I’m making my second batch with a few tweaks, but I won’t ever forget the first time I ate these. I couldn’t get enough! Who knew? (well I guess you did! lol ). 5 out 5 stars and a big virtual hug to you!!
Rosie says
Thanks for trying my recipe!
Robin says

Great recipe!! I was skeptic at first with the cornstarch, I added a little more water as it was cooking but not much more, it turned out DELICIOUS! I made some white rice for all the delicious gravy it made….YUMMY!!
Christie Batchelder says
Bought these by accident didn’t read and thought they were pork shoulder chunks but decided I could figure something out but remained so skeptical even while they were cooking. I was amazed!!! They were absolutely delicious!!! Followed the recipe almost exactly just used a little less spices since had a little less neck bones. Served with mashed potatoes and lima beans.
Pam says
Absolutely delicious! Made some rice for the gravy.
Charlotte says

Rosie says
Hi Kate! I used brown jasmine rice.
Adriana says
I look up recipes all the time but I’ve never left a comment before. This dish turned out THAT good. I dare say it’s the most delicious food I’ve ever eaten. I put it over rice, stovetop stuffing, and black beans. OMG it’s so effing good!!!!! I followed the recipe exactly except that I seared the necks on both sides on a cast iron first, threw them in the slow cooker, and then quickly sautéed the onions in the same cast iron pot. I used homemade chicken broth, and cooked on high for like 4.5 hours and then on low for an extra hour or so. AMAZING. My 3 year old loved it also. Thank you for sharing this recipe
Rosie says
I feel so special! Thanks so much trying my recipe, and for leaving a comment!
Evett Turner says
I tried this recipe in my InstaPot. Turned out GREAT! I pressure cooked for about 15 minutes first and then left on slow cooker for about 2 hours. I did add celery (chopped leaves).
Josh says
I sell forest raised pork in the Chicagoland area, and this is among my daughter’s favorite recipes! The only problem is my wife (and customers) wants to use neck bones for tomato pasta sauce, but it’s great to have another option. Great recipe for an underappreciated, wallet friendly, cut of meat. Thank you!
Rosie says
Hi Josh! Thanks so much for trying my recipe. Check out my Neck Bones & Potato Recipe is you haven’t already.
Yvette says
61 yrs old..was in my 20s 1st time i ever had pork neck bones and only had them in spaghetti sauce. I picked 3 up at local butcher and thought theres gotta be something else i can do with them. Didnt wanna make soup…and alas I landed on this recipe. Only thing i didnt have was corn starch but reading thru comments i “went for it” using flour as substitute and making on top of the stove. Grant it I only had 1.25 lbs but…OH HOW I WISH I HAD AT LEAST 3 MORE LBS!
This is absolutely, 100% DELICIOUS!
Ive had a bottle of apple cider vinegar in my cupboard for heck a very long time (i hate the taste of vinegar) but listened/watched the video and followed the recipe pretty much to a T (being shy 3# i kinda guesstimated on spice measurements)
I cant wait to start looking thru and trying more of YOUR recipes..now that my daughter flew this Mommas nest been a very long time since ive taken time to cook..really cook for just myself let alone try something new.
Sorry for how long this comment is but I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW DELICIOUS THESE WERE! Thank you again..future comments hopefully will be shorter. Looking forward to making them for my daughter and her family (course i have to look for your recipe on collard greens another NEW for me. Bless you … from this 61 yr old looking forward to cooking again!
Rosie says
Hi Yvette! I’m so glad that you tried, and loved my recipe!! XOXO

Will this recipe work on beef neck bones too? Can’t remember if I bought beef or pork lol
Rosie says
You can definitely use beef neck bones. XOXO
Em says
Cooked on high for 4 hours and came out Soo soft. Meat falling off on some pieces, can easily cut with a spoon. Sooo good! I was worried i was gunna mess up and they come out like rubber or something. I think I used too much corn starch or too little water cuz the liquid in my crock pot is much thicker than yours in the video but I’m gunna make some potatoes to go with this. NGL I was a little horrified when I was cleaning the pork but worth it. Will definitely make again.
Donnie Colson says
Can you use celery instead of onions in this recipe?
Rosie says
If you’re a celery fan, you can definitely do that.
